How to plan an academic essay

Build a focused answer and outline before drafting full paragraphs.

A useful essay plan connects the question to a line of reasoning. It is a map you can revise as you learn more. Start with the task and evidence you can support, rather than a generic introduction.

1. Turn the prompt into a question

Identify the topic, action and boundaries. Rewrite the prompt as a question that keeps its limits visible. Avoid drifting into background that does not help answer it.

2. Draft a working answer

Write one provisional sentence that states what the evidence currently supports. This gives the essay direction without claiming more than your sources can show.

3. Group evidence into points

Gather notes from course materials and approved sources. Group them by the point they support, record source details and explain each source's relevance. Keep quotations distinct from your paraphrases.

4. Give each paragraph a job

  • State the point the paragraph will make.
  • Identify supporting evidence or an example.
  • Explain what the evidence shows.
  • Link the point to the question or next step.

Combine paragraphs with the same job or clarify their difference. Reconsider material that cannot be connected to the question.

5. Check the essay's shape

Plan an introduction that frames the question, body points that develop the answer, and a conclusion that follows from the discussion. Use the structure and length rules in your assignment brief.

Review your outline

  1. Can you point to a direct answer?
  2. Does each main point help establish it?
  3. Are counterpoints included where the task calls for them?
  4. Can you trace claims to sources or marked interpretations?
  5. Does the plan meet your course rules?

Revise the outline when your evidence changes. Make sure the final work is your own and follows your institution's rules.
