How to break down an assignment brief

A practical reading process for understanding what a task asks before deciding how to answer it.

An assignment brief often combines several requirements: a subject, an action, a scope, a format and rules for evidence or submission. Starting to write after one quick read can make those requirements easy to miss.

1. Find the action

Look for the main instruction verb, such as explain, compare, evaluate or discuss. These suggest different kinds of answers. A comparison needs a basis for examining similarities and differences; an evaluation needs criteria and a reasoned judgement. Check your course guidance for how these terms are used.

2. Mark the subject and boundaries

Note limits such as a time period, case, theory, population, text or set of materials. Turn broad phrases into questions you can answer. If a prompt asks you to discuss two approaches in one setting, list both approaches and the setting separately so none disappears from your plan.

3. Separate deliverables from topic

Record what you must submit and its requirements: report, reflection, presentation, word range, citation style or appendices. Use the brief and course handbook as the source of truth; requirements vary.

4. Turn the rubric into review questions

Ask: Does the response address the task? Is the reasoning supported? Are sources handled consistently? Does the structure help the reader follow the answer? Revisit these questions while planning and editing.

5. Make a one-page task map

  1. Copy the central question in your own words.
  2. List the action, topic and boundaries.
  3. Record format, length, deadline and citation rules.
  4. Write the criteria you will check before submission.
  5. Mark unclear requirements and ask your instructor early.

Keep the map beside your notes and revisit it as your understanding changes. Follow your institution's academic-integrity rules and make your own decisions about submitted work.
